Biography

Benyou Wang is an Assistant Professor at Shenzhen Loop Area Institute and also an Assistant Professor, PhD supervisor, and Presidential Young Professor at the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. His research interests include multimodal large foundation models, mathematical reasoning with large models, applications of large language models (in healthcare), and human–agent interaction. He has received five best paper awards (or equivalents) from leading conferences and workshops in information retrieval, natural language processing, and machine learning, including the SIGIR 2017 Best Paper Award (Honorable Mention), the NAACL 2019 Best Explainable NLP Paper Award, the NLPCC 2022 Best Paper Award, the Best Paper Award at the ICLR 2025 Financial AI Workshop, and the NeurIPS 2025 ResponsibleFM Outstanding Paper Award. His work has been published in venues such as Operations Research and top conferences/journals including NeurIPS/ICLR/ICML/COLM and ACL/EMNLP/NAACL. He has also received Huawei Spark Award, the Tencent Rhino-Bird Program, the Huawei AI Hundred Schools Program, and the CCF Didi Gaia Scholars Program.

He led the development of the HuatuoGPT family of large language models, which has been deployed in dozens of public hospitals in Shenzhen and Jiangxi as well as hundreds of community health centers; the models have surpassed one million downloads in HuggingFace and earned over ten thousand GitHub stars. He also developed the Apollo medical LLM series, covering 50 languages worldwide with the goal of benefiting the global population of 7 billion. He led his team to win a gold medal in the 2nd AI Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO 2), and co-released ORLM, the first large model for operations research and optimization, with Cardinal Operations. In collaboration with KAUST, he developed what was then considered the world’s best open-source Arabic large language model. His work has been featured and reported by outlets and organizations including Nature, CCTV, the Financial Times, Global Times, Hongxing News, Southern Metropolis Daily, Shenzhen TV, the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission, and the Longgang District Government of Shenzhen.
